Re: VHS Re-Visited: 'Ma & Pa Kettle At Home'
Hey Al. I guess if you want to start from the very beginning, watch "The Egg & I" (1947) starring Claudette Colbert and Fred MacMurray. The Kettles play their neighboring farmers. This is a enjoyable film overall but if you want to sample the best of "The Kettles", you can't go wrong with "Ma & Pa Kettle" (1949), "Ma & Pa Kettle Go To Town" (1950), or "Ma & Pa Kettle Back On THe Farm" (1951). These are the first three entries in the series and they have somewhat progressing storylines. Back On The Farm was the first one I saw and maybe my favorite still to this day. THere is just a lot of subtle lazy humor in these films, especially for the time. Percy Kilbride to me is the straw that stirred the drink in these films and the last two entries do not have Kilbride in them as he had retired from acting...I think. Marjorie Main & Percy Kilbride made a good team for sure. Some people do not like southern humor but I love it. Give it a try! Definitely worth exploring. Any fan of the Andy Griffith Show should love Ma & Pa Kettle!
