Some of you might be aware of the fraudulent activities of one Alfred Scholz (see the link here: https://www.discogs.com/artist/730304-Alfred-Scholz ) who passed off the works of hundreds of established artists under pseudonyms as original recordings for his budget labels - a variation on the Joyce Hatto case, if you like but on a larger scale.
I recently - and very cheaply on eBay - acquired, on a friend's recommendation, a recording of my favourite Mozart String quartet, K 465 the Dissonance accompanied by two youthful 'Milanese' quartets, K 156/134b and K 160/159a. My suspicions were aroused when I saw that absolutely no details regarding recording dates and venue or the personnel of the quartet were provided - nor had I ever heard of, or was able to find any information about, the "Caspar Da Salo Quartet" - but a quick search revealed that it was a manufactured front: "A fictitious ensemble, created by Alfred Scholz who used old analogue recordings by other post-WWII orchestras (for example, the real Quartetto Italiano) and credited them to fictitious ensembles and orchestras in order to sell his catalog."
This is the recording, issued in 1987 on the "Cavalier" label: https://www.amazon.com/Mozart-String-Quartets/dp/B00009P9A3/ref=cm_cr_srp_d_product_top?ie=UTF8
A long shot, I know, but I wonder if anyone recognises the true performers from these timings?
1. Adagio, Allegro [10:41]
2. Andante cantabile [8:00]
3. Menuetto allegro [5:28]
4. Allegro molto [5:45]
- and it is indeed a lovely account. It must have been recordedin the early 80s as it is digital. Those are the only clues I can provide - but you never know; someone might recognise it.
