I think like others, the painting is not a realistic representation of the actual piece and was painted from preparatory sketches, rather from life, and given that the painting was meant to be viewed in less sophisticated circumstances, ie candle/gas light; I don't believe there is any definitive proof any changes have been made; the integrity of the piece and any changes made would warrant documentation is this was the case, it isn't simply a case of "adding some gold"
