My guess would be that the family order is worn to the left shoulder, as dictated by convention and convenience. When considered, the right arm - and shoulder - is consistently motioned when greeting people. Being placed to the left shoulder avoids any disturbance to the order's pin. And probably because the Order of the Elephant extends from the left shoulder to the right hip, would also explain as to why the order is worn this way in Denmark. Interesting though that in Norway the family order of King Harald is also worn on the left shoulder, in spite of the Order of St Olav extending from the right shoulder to the left hip. And of course in Britain the family order of Elizabeth II is also worn on the left shoulder. But only when the wearing of a foreign order is dictated necessary, has the family order of Margrethe II been worn on the left shoulder as a means to secure the sash in place. *The countess of Frederiksborg - formerly Princess Alexandra - Romanian State Visit to Denmark, 2003 *The Crown Princess - Swedish Crown Princely wedding, Stockholm, 2010 *Princess Marie - Finnish State Visit to Denmark, 2013 However, the Crown Princess did not repeat the "mishap" and Princess Marie herself re-adjusted the order to the left shoulder which makes one think that a little guidence was forthcoming from a certain quater.
