Extravagant Gifts Archived Message

Personally I find some of these gifts to be extremely extravagant (and gaudy) by any standard and the continuous flow of jewels beckons the question what the underlying purpose is of such gifts, besides showing off tremendous wealth of the generous hosts... I would be very interested to see some pictures of some of these Gifts from the Middle East. --Previous Message-- : Well, I'm really not sure what to think of : this. First of all I must state that I feel : absolutely no sympathy towards any kind of : dictatorial regimes. : Now, non democratic roulers giving lavish : jewelry to royal guest is not new at all, : and journalists should know it. : : HM the Queen received several fabulous gifts : (Diamond necklace from King Khalid, saphire : and Diamond set...) from Middle Eastern : royals and she keeps wearing them often, I : don't remember ever seing any remarks on how : she should sell these jewels. : Also the Duchess of Cornwall received : several sets when visiting Midlle East and : she has worn them several times. : : On the other hand, how can you tell your : host in an oficial visit "oh lovely : gift, thank you but I cannot accept it : because you are a bloody dictator". And : we must not forget that these visits carry : extreme economical importance for the : countries involved, and often there is a : personal friendship between royals on both : sides... : Diplomacy should be able to adress these : questions in a manner that suited both : nations without any controversial issue, I : assume they have professional staff that : could arrange it. : : If the King and Prime Minister wished to : present the Countess with nice jewels : could'nt they do so as private citizens? I : assume that the controversial matter was the : fact that the jewels were given during the : oficial visit, and thus becomimng oficial : gifts? : : : : : : : : --Previous Message-- : Not the aquamarine set. : You can read : : : : http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/theroyalfamily/8999280/Countess-of-Wessex-criticised-for-accepting-jewels-from-Bahrain.html : : : : http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2083358/Sophies-gems-despots-Countess-Wessex-accepted-jewellery-bloody-Bahrain.html : : --Previous Message-- : : From Bahrain as a gift? : : Are they the tiara with a green stone in : center she : Wears as a necklace sometimes? : : Thanks : TMN : : : Daily Mail online : : : :
