In other places, and it might have been a "People" magazine, Field said that there was approval from the palace and from each of the various royal ladies, citing that Princess Anne returned hers most promptly.

The innaccuracies in the book would, therefore, seem to indicate that the Royal Family themselves may not be aware of the history of their own jewels, which is not uncommon. I doubt if my great-niece will know the history of a certain suite of pearls she will ultimately inheret, for instance. The Queen herself did not realize that the Girls of Great Britain tiara and her wedding bandeau went together. So, it is quite possible that the inaccuracies in the Field book could have been presumed to be correct by the Royal Family.

None of the present generation show the late Queen Mary's obsessive interest in the jewels.

My own mother would be hard pressed to tell you some of the history of her own pieces and would likely shrug off an such inaccuracies. I have a much better knowledge of her jewellery than she does, as much as she enjoys wearing it. For her, they are just ornaments, perhaps sentimental, perhaps personal, but they go with this or that outfit or mood and her interest ends there.

: Yes, the amount of input provided by the
