The two families certainly have different practices or rules for the use of the jewels. I think I prefer the British practice. Except for ceremonial pieces, jewels should be personal I think.
--Previous Message-- : all very valid and on point thoughts : karenl.....in a day when the "big : bling" is reserved for very special : occasions, it wouldn't seem quite right for : the new girl to be seen covered in historic : jewels....although i'm sure if we here on : this board had our way, EVERY day at the : palace would see the members covered from : head to toe!....IMO the Dutch royal family : leads the pack when it comes to the junior : ladies being seen in the most varied pieces : from the vaults......it's not uncommon to : see historic pieces on the minor nieces one : night, and the very same pieces on Queen : Maxima or Princess Beatrix a week : later.....that never happens with the : Windsors.....totally different family : dynamic and ideology....IMHO, the Dutch : ladies seem to have an attitude of enjoying : the wearing and display of the jewels, where : the Windsors see them more as a tangible : symbol of the throne that needs to be earned : over time....not sure if i've succeeded in : putting that into the correct : words.....Nellie, any thoughts here? : : --Previous Message-- : : Even though I can't speak for the Duchess, : I've wondered if HRH has avoided the bling : and sparkles not only because she may not be : a big fan of bling, but may feel that she's : a newcomer to the Royal Family and feels she : may be looked at as inappropriate in wearing : the spectacular Royal jewels or as : overstepping her place. Catherine may be : fearful or being accused of "overdoing : it." Just an opinion to throw out. : --Previous Message-- : I agree...with all.... : : With the passage of time, tastes and styles : change. And as Nellie put it, I do think : we've seen the future style of the Windsors. : Not just in clothing and jewels, but in : terms of public relations and public : engagement. I'm all for it, 100%. Except : that part of me that we all have in common - : the part that loves those beautiful stones, : and craves to see them. I'm sure we have : some surprises and mysteries in store for us : yet, but I do believe over time we'll see : these beautiful things more in museums and : books than on actual people. : : Of course, this is all just my opinion. : : --Previous Message-- : : I had half expected to see a few long : dresses last night but that was clearly not : the dress code. : Everything about their visit has been : understated, tending to the everyday ways : and styles of the people they were meeting, : whom I am sure were from fields of endeavour : that interested the couple. : There was no event to pander to the egos of : "names" who might need to be seen : in the right company. : I think we have seen the Cambridge style. : : : --Previous Message-- : : There is only one reason and one reason only : for wearing little jewelery for a woman: : TASTE. : It is only a matter of taste. : If a woman (however poor or rich) likes to : wear broches, bracelets, earrings, rings SHE : WILL ! : That Kate doesn't like wearing (much) : jewelery is obvious. : Just as it is clear that the present : sovereign-princess of Monaco does not like : to wear jewels. : : Lets be honoust: do you know of any woman in : your social circle that loves jewelery but : never wears jewels because she cannot afford : it? : Hahaha still have to meet the first woman : like that. : : I always find it nice to see the big pieces : come out. : The pieces with a lot of tradition. : That's why I am happy with the likes of : Máxima and Mary, who "Dare to : Wear". : But first there must be a love for jewels. : : : : --Previous Message-- : I think the "austerity" excuse is : going to have to last a very long time, : decades, if that's the reasoning. : : : : : : : : : : : : : :
