I think that this note is misguiding. It really speaks of 2 gifts (i) the Necklace and (ii) the 5 Graving Dock loose diamonds. Note 1 (partial) "The announcement of the gift to Princess Elizabeth [the first gift of the necklace] (and further gifts to other members of the Royal Family) [as per the Trove photo above] was made by the South African government on 29 January 1947 (the Times , 30 January 1947). Mention was also made of a proposed gift of four stones 'for mounting in a brooch' to mark the opening by the Princess of a new graving dock at East London. [the second gift] In the event five large diamonds...were given... Cheers! Bryce Edit: A third gift was the DeBeers Diamond (used as the clasp and later as part of the bracelet.) --Previous Message-- : According to Roberts in The Queen's Diamonds, : page 272 note 1, the Princess' exclamation : of delight was heard when she saw the gift : of 5 large diamonds presented after she : opened the Graving Dock on 3 March 1947. : : --Previous Message-- : This from Fields book I don’t know how : accurate it is but here it goes. : Pss Elizabeth was presented by Field-Marshal : Smuts with her gift from the Government: a : silver casket containing a long chain : necklace of 21 large diamonds that had be : cut and polished in Johannesburg, the : largest of which was 10 carats.
