Re: Greville jewels - gifts Archived Message

Even gifts by HM (before death) or after given by Charles can be liable to capital gains tax due to be paid by anyone receiving valuable items. So neither he nor HM are 'free' to give jewels without some sort of duty needing to be paid by the recipient.

: Apparently the Queen Mothers estate was left
: directly to the Queen so that it did not
: incur death duties. Had she left items to
: Charles he would have had to pay tax on
: them. Sovereign to Sovereign inheritance is
: exempt from death duties. Hence I would
: expect that HM will leave her entire estate
: to Charles with private instruction on items
: she wishes Andrew, Edward, Anne & their
: families to have. Either that or items will
: be given as gifts while HM is alive.

: Publicly we were informed that Queen

: Who inherited the Mrs Grevels jewels :
    : Charles
: for the tiara but for the necklace and

: This is such an interesting question! We
    : know
: from Mrs Greville's will that she left her
: jewels to Queen Elizabeth with her loving
: thoughts! I wish we had a list of those
    : jewels!

: Ashdean's comment about an emerald tiara
: belonging to Mrs Greville -- possibly
: bequeathed to Queen Elizabeth (the Queen
: Mother) has prompted my query.
: How have people been able to compile lists
: of the jewels which were bequeathed to QEQM?
: Roberts in the Queen's Diamonds has provided
: authoritative evidence for some - but what
: evidence is there about other jewels in the
    : bequest?
: I have not read Vincent Meylan's books so I
: apologise to you, Vincent, if you have
    : already written about this.
