Thats a good clue Jorge, that the earrings could be a wedding gift from the Braganza "cousins". Was ever a list of the wedding gifts made public? It would be very interesting to see if this earrings were among them. However I question why did CP Mary took so long to wear them... Maybe because they are fashionable now? Or they could be a recent aquisition. Your corrections are always more than welcome Jorge. I new our gold was of the finest quality and was convinced that it was 24 carat, but 19.2 carats seems fine also . --Previous Message-- : Wow! What a surprise to see this kind of : earrings on CP Mary. : : To me it is indeed a pair of the traditional : Portuguese earrings «Brincos a Rainha» : (Queen style earrings). : : As I said in a previous thread, it is a very : traditional piece whose history goes back to : the XVIII century. : : In my opinion the earrings are made of gold : and were one of the wedding presents from : the Portuguese Royal Family (we know that : the Dukes value a lot the Portuguese : national traditions). : : Cristina, sorry but I have to make a small : correction to what you said: traditionally, : portuguese gold jewels (and coins) are made : with gold of 19.2 carats (80% pure gold), : not with gold of 24 carats. Above us (the : Portuguese People) I think that only India : with 22 carats gold (91.6% pure gold). : Pure gold is, allegedly, extremely difficult : to work with. : : The earrings of CP seem huge, so I would : guess that they could cost easily over 2500 : euros or even more than 3000 euros. : : Besides the link provided by Cristina you : can also see more Portuguese gold jewels : here . In that page it is possible to see : both traditional pieces and modern : interpretation of traditional pieces. Hope : you all enjoy. : :
