--Previous Message-- : Dear Beth1 ! : : Thank you for kind photo of this : emerald, diamond pearl sautoir ! : : I only knew the photo taken in Brussels in : July 1935. : : Sad this necklace was not worn afterwards ! : : I really hope that one day the Doc will wear : this necklace with Queen Alexandra emerald : drop earrings and the Greville emerald : brooch ! : : Best regards, : : Franck, : : --Previous Message-- : The photo posted by Annie was taken on 1 : July : 1935 in Brussels. Getty has another photo : from this occasion and, although the dark : stoned double clasp is not clear, it is : possible to see where it is. : See : : http://www.gettyimages.com.au/detail/news-photo/1st-july-1935-the-duke-and-duchess-of-york-pictured-in-news-photo/79656001 : : QEQM was photographed wearing this necklace : on other occasions in 1935, but I have not : identified photos of it in other years. : : Same necklace but no drops : : http://www.gettyimages.com.au/detail/news-photo/26th-june-the-duchess-of-york-later-the-queen-mother-with-news-photo/79666822 : : Same necklace but no drops : : http://www.gettyimages.com.au/detail/news-photo/elizabeth-angela-marguerite-duchess-of-york-having-an-x-ray-news-photo/3369132 : : Looks like the same necklace but no drops : : http://www.gettyimages.com.au/detail/news-photo/elizabeth-duchess-of-york-later-the-queen-mother-meets-news-photo/3134590 : : Same necklace, no drops, poorly coloured : : http://www.gettyimages.com.au/detail/news-photo/queen-elizabeth-visiting-a-childrens-ward-at-the-middlesex-news-photo/520682037 : : If we have previously correctly identified : the Indian pearls from the Treasury of the : Punjab from the photos of QEII then I do not : believe that the pearls worn in 1935 are the : Indian pearls because : 1. The pearls are not as large : 2. I doubt if in 1935 Queen Mary would have : given her daughter-in-law the Indian pearls. : 3. The necklace worn by QEQM in 1935 has a : double jewelled clasp. While the pearls from : the Punjab are said to have 2 rubies in the : clasp, if the pearls QEII has been : photographed wearing are the ones in : question, the necklace does not have a : double jewelled clasp. I believe it is : possible to see in the photos of QEII that : there are 2 rubies, one above the other - : not side by side. : : Thankyou everyone for such an interesting discussion & useful pictures & ideas! It seems to make sense now that the Queen Mother, when Duchess of York wore the double row of pearls often with another one or two longer strings, as you say Beth she would not have had use of the "Indian Pearls with ruby clasp", Queens Caroline & Anne pearls or the Hanovarian pearls, at least until she became Queen. The double brooch on the Duchess of York (QM)`s hat looks a lot like the "clasp" on the pearls so maybe she used brooches in this way. Also the back view of the Queen Mother in the film clearly shows a more single clasp (not like the two side by side ones) & in one of Arthur`s pictures, the very small pearls between the large ones, on the side (near the back)can clearly be seen, that also show up in the colour picture of the Queen wearing the Indian Pearl necklace with ruby clasp. I think someone should write a book on the Queen`s pearls rather like Roberts did with the diamonds, there is certainly plenty of subject matter! Thanks again Annie : : :
