Prince William was shown, once, speaking in his apartment at Kensington Palace in front of an elaborate Linley desk which has a carving of the buildings at Horse Guards Parade as its back. I don't remember whether that desk was thought to have been a wedding present from the Linleys. The idea of giving the lotus tiara to the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge is very sweet. There is evidence, however, that the lotus tiara was kept at Clarence House, and that raises the question of its ownership. Serena Linley apparently intended to wear the Poltimore for her wedding. The evidence is her hair style and newspaper footage before the wedding. But for some reason the lotus tiara was retrieved for her to wear, seemingly from the Queen Mother's vaults. Whether Princess Margaret had her own jewelry storage at KP, I have no idea. Perhaps her important pieces still resided at Clarence House. Or perhaps the lotus tiara was a lifetime loan rather than an outright gift. The permission indicates that it was in Margaret's possession, but the reserved copyright could have been that of anyone including the Queen Mother or the crown. The travels of the lotus tiara are still something of a mystery, even though we know exactly who has worn it since it was created in the 1930s - including for some reason a friend of a Queen Mother's butler who was photographed with it rakishly set on his head! He and his partner may have brought it to Serena on her wedding day. At some point they had the opportunity to make a silly snapshot. The halo tiara has apparently always been the Queen's, even though she has never worn it and Princess Margaret and Princess Anne did wear it when they were younger. The lotus tiara has a more interesting past. I like this tiara, and it's nice to see it on the head of the Duchess. It suits her admirably.
