James Pope Hennessy in his biography of Queen Mary stated (p 583) 'Queen Mary wrote to the Duke of Windsor, whose diamond Garter Star she wished to borrow so that she might wear it at his brother's Crowning,...'
His comment has raised a series of questions for me, as we know that Queen Mary had been given her own set of Garter insignia by the Marys of the Empire as a coronation gift in 1911. LauraM gave us the details a few years ago http://members2.boardhost.com/royal-jewels/msg/archive/1410136816.html
What is unclear to me (as my eye is not good enough to judge) is which Garter Star Queen Mary wore to the 1937 coronation. And why would she have needed to borrow the one belonging to the Duke of Windsor?
Some images.

At the 1937 coronation.
After 1937
I hope that some posters will have a sharper eye than mine and perhaps clearer photos which might let us know if Queen Mary wore a different Garter Star at the 1937 coronation.
