It is quite likely Queen Mary wore her own Garter star. Edit: to explain my thinking further - I would expect that Edward when King wore some insignia of greater importance than his personal versions given to him at his investiture. It is possible he went away with some. The Queen as soveriegn of the Order wears a magnificent George, which I love, which would not have been the one given to her at her investitiure.
