If the Illustrated London News was correct the Duke of Windsor, as Prince of Wales, was given his own set of insignia. Illustrated London News 7 October 1911. I'll try to re-read the Duke of Windsor's 2 least sympathetic biographies in the coming week but, as far as I can remember, none of them accused him of making off with insignia or royal jewels to which he was not entitled. I am now wondering if, despite the comment in the Pope Hennessy biography, Queen Mary did wear her own Garter Star to the 1937 coronation. On the left is QM's star from her photo at the 1937 coronation. On the right is her Garter Star from an earlier occasion. (I openly admit that I cannot say if the 2 stars are one and the same - perhaps someone else will be able to.) I have yet not found a photo of the Duke of Windsor (at any stage of his life) which shows his Garter Star, so a comparison of the various stars is not yet possible. --Previous Message-- : : Queen Mary was certainly very strong on the : history of pieces and belief in what she saw : as their rightful places. : : I do think that Edward when Sovereign would : have had his pick of the bunch when it came : to insignia of all sorts. : So I am inclined to think Queen Mary was not : asking for Edward's investiture star. :
