It would be interesting to know which set of Garter insignia was given to the Duke of Windsor. It is even possible that a new set was ordered for him. I doubt if the Duke would have taken anything to which he was not entitled. If he had, I suspect that various unsympathetic biographers would have highlighted that to discredit him. In any event the star would have had to be returned to him as he remained a Knight of the Garter. For me the intriguing question is why Queen Mary did not have access to (or wish to wear) her own Garter Star. One possible reason might be that she was going to lend her star to her brother, the Earl of Athlone, who was made a Knight in 1927.
