Re: I Owe It All To You
I’ll admit it: I was nervous about this. Happily my fears have proved to be unfounded. This is a beautifully produced album that finds DSB in fine autumnal form. That enormous cavernous sound is no longer there - how could it be otherwise? Nevertheless, it allows DSB to phrase even more sensitively and to demonstrate the lovely burnished tonality she has in the lower register of her voice. There’s a purity to the singing that I had not expected and that was often very moving. It’s a fine punctuation point to a stellar recording career and a fitting finale to a remarkable legacy. How lucky we are to receive this gift of thanks from an artist who has nothing left to prove. The thanks are all ours, Dame Shirley: thank you for your talent, thank you for entertaining and enriching the lives of so many. Thank you for the years.
