As for Bernstein, well he's not my favourite in all the Mahler symphonies, but I certainly think he is very good with the First Symphony. That said, you certainly won't be alone in thinking he is a bit "too much" in this music - you may be aware of the story that he was scheduled to record the First Symphony much earlier on in the 1960's with the NYPO, a recording delayed at the conductor's request shortly after Bruno Walter's last recording appeared ....!

Lee, thank you for your interesting and exhaustive (I'm sure!) survey of Mahler 1. Of the recordings I know, I found that our opinions are usually not far off at all (except that I think Bernstein is overrated).
For future surveys (or perhaps a revision of the first one), you might consider adding an appendix listing all the recordings you gave a score to, in descending score order and in alphabetical order. This would be a useful reference.
