John, I suspect from your timeline that we are the same age! My name is Rachel, and I grew up in a small town in Indiana. My first exposure to royalty was the Life magazine from the Swedish Royal wedding in 1976. I spent hours looking at that on my grandmother's "summer porch." By the age of 9 I had read all the books in the children's section of our local library, and the children's librarian took me upstairs to introduce me to one of the "adult" librarians, and the first book she found for me was one of Jean Plaidy's royal history novels, so by the time Prince Charles married Lady Diana Spencer, I was already obsessed. I had the Diana fringe haircut and the backwards black sheep sweater and at one time probably every issue of Majesty magazine from No. 1. I spent part of my high school years in het Gooi, Netherlands (amongst hockeymeisjes and the sort ) and I had the pleasure of meeting Princes Margriet, who has remained one of my favorite royals. Otherwise, my only brushes with royalty were with the (then) Duchess of York and the Duke of Edinburgh and could only be characterized as remote. I am a graphic designer/art director and I have for years specialized in magazines and books (a terrible business to be in currently as everything becomes an "e" venture) and I am putting my literature education to work as I write fiction. I went from being Rachel on Boardhost boards (I've been around since 1998) to Rachel in IN when there was another Rachel posting pre-2000 who was inflammatory and aggressive. If you were someone that was bombed by that Rachel, I apologize and would like to belatedly point out that it wasn't me. I somehow balance my ongoing interest in Royalty and jewels with the fact that my belief system has become primarily Quaker. I have moved back the general area of my hometown 2-1/2 years ago, and currently live in a heavily Amish area. When exchanges get heated on the boards, it is a strange comfort to look out the window, see my neighbors drive by in their buggies and horse drawn wagons and pony carts, and have instant confirmation that there is a life outside the minutiae of royalty, royal history and royal jewels. But there is also a comfort in the shared community of posters and lurkers. I feel I "know" so many of you even though we have not met, your interests and narrative voices are all very distinct. I look forward to the Jubilees this year of the British and Danish queens, and yes, all the glitter that involves! I would love to see the resolution of the Princess Anne mystery tiara, and I'd love to see the Duchess of Cornwall bust open the heritage of Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother even more. My longshot fantasy is that we will start to see some of the jewels of Princess Margaret were those of a "lifetime loan" via her mother, and we see them popping up again on either of the two D of C's. It's a fantasy, we will see if it ever happens... To all, a happy 2012! It's been a genuine pleasure to know you all, and I look forward to another year of discoveries and mysteries!
