The collection is very much private property. The foundation to which the collection belongs is a private foundation of the family, and it is stated in the documents of the foundation that when the monarchy is abolished, the foundation ceases to exist and the belongings return to the (then) former monarch. It is even stated that the foundation can sell properties, when they are no longer deemed to support the execution of the royal function. This makes it possible, for example, that if they would decide the Stuart tiara is so out of fashion they will never wear it again, it would be possible to sell it.
