I was once taken into the attics of the palace and it all quite looked like any attic of an old country house, that nobody ever bothered to look into, let alone inventorise it. What I remember best, is a large room, filled with stacks of parasols and wooden church-candelabras, one more rotten and broken than the other. Other rooms were filled with dirty, old silverchests. My companion and I were convinced that through the years many items must have been stolen from those attics. The problem with many Portuguese institutions (and Ajuda is the best possible example of it) is that there is hardly a change in management, so innovation and modernisation in general is practically non-existent. The palácio da Pena in Sintra today still has the same director as they had in the early eighties and no: They still don't have a website... Probably she's finally gone, straight on to a nursing home , but the director for more than 30 years at Ajuda got her job, I understand, because her husband was a minister at the time. You just have to read the prefaces of the different catalogues of Ajuda, to see the feeling of self-importance of the lady. --Previous Message-- : The Portuguese Crown Jewels are a pretty nice : collection, to bad the best parts were : stolen. Just imagine if the Monarchy was : restored D. Isabel with the sapphires : hanging off her circle necklace and the star : tiara on her head. Such a shame these : pieces are poorly hidden (according to D : Duarte) and aren't on display for people to : see. If these jewels were displayed it would : attract more people to the Palace da Ajuda : (including me lol).
