A few days ago I took inventory of my pens. I hadn't done that for a few years and had begun feeling a nagging urge to stop procrastinating and finally organize and document what I have.
Last time I took inventory I was surprised to find that I had half as many pens as I thought I had. Seems I have some sort of hazy number that I'm okay with owning, so was pleased to know I hadn't gone over that. I'm fine this time too.
But! I've been negligent at keeping track of them. Back in the 2000s, I began filling a small 3-ring binder with handwritten documentation. Then I switched to a digital PowerPoint file with digital photos included for each pen. That turned out to be more cumbersome because of the way I'd organized it — difficult to insert new acquisitions into the middle of categories, or to delete slides of pens I no longer had. I just stopped doing it at all for nearly a decade.
Now I've decided to start over, going back to the 3-ring binder idea. I've chosen this because whenever it is that I do leave this earth, a binder should be easier for whoever is left with the task of sorting through my belongings. Think I'll attach an actual photo of the pen to each page as well.
What's your system for documenting your collection/accumulation?
