I think there were two different tiaras. Because how could it be worn at the Schaumburg-Lippe wedding in 1977 if it had been broken up around 1972, as stated in Bjarne's book? Bjarne's source was Count Christian of Rosenborg. From another member of the family I know that Helena's tiara was indeed broken up some time after her death.
Furthermore, if two of the ears-of-wheat had been removed before the tiara was given to Feodora of Schaumburg-Lippe, then why have we later seen Countess Dorrit of Rosenborg with 6 ears-of-wheat in her tiara? The last time Countess Dorrit wore the tiara may have been at the wedding of Princess Benedikte in 1968. However, this photo is from the wedding of Princess Margrethe in 1967 (a pre-wedding banquet):
