Wow! Thank you for the picture, Nellie. The late Duke of Kent was famous for his love for sapphires (as reported in Leslie Field's The Queen's Jewels), but I did not know about the Duchess of Kent having two brooches identical to the Queen Mother's one. Do we know if these Kent brooches are still in their descendants' possession? And are there other examples of sisters-in-law owning two similar jewels?
About this sapphire brooch, Field writes this: "King George VI, who loved sapphires and had a connoisseur's appreciation of the stones, purchased many pieces of sapphire jewellery from Cartier as gifts for Queen Elizabeth and for his daughter Princess Elizabeth. One of Queen Elizabeth's most loved brooches, a large six-petalled flower with a central cluster of diamonds, was an anniversary gift from King George VI; she [QEQM] very often wears it at the races".
Queen Elizabeth II has worn this brooch only once, for the opening of the Commonwealth meeting in Perth, Australia, on 28 October 2011:
