1948 is incomparable with 1980. When Queen Juliana came to the throne, WWII was just behind and the East Indies still belonged to the vast Empire. The people were in awe towards the monarchy. 1980 was a year after the changes in the 1960's and 1970's. The same period which ' caused' the radical changes in Sweden's monarchy, for an example. 1980 was only four years after the scandal which rocked the Dutch monarchy into its core fundaments (Lockheed). On the day itself Amsterdam saw the worst riots since WWII, hundreds of policemen and citizens were wounded in fierce charges. The crowds were moving towards Dam Square. Having a lavish white tie party with the Stuart Diamond glittering would have been a replay of Titanic: gentlemen, we are sinking, but please play the music and we will dance. That the Queen even considered to do the Investiture in deux-pièces, in an attempt to re-find connection with changed times is telling for the confusion. All traditional strongholds and conventions have gone since the 1960's. Who would have thought that the once so revered Oranges would see the city under siege on such a highday as an Investiture? You can not blame Beatrix for 'changing' and tone down the glanz und gloria without the given situation of that time. King Willem-Alexander will start his reign under so much better circumstances than his mother in 1980. I am sure that it will be a great day and that under Queen Máxima we will se more glitter. The day itself will be incomparable with 1980. Back then Beatrix 'went into exile' to a ferry for a cheap evening program. In 2013 we will see the new King in a sort Parade of Sail going from the one architectural highpoint to the other architectural highpoint and the evening event will be so much more festive than on that lousy ferry back in 1980. It will be black tie but a promising start of a new kingship which will treat us on this jewelry board for a long time to come. --Previous Message-- : For your information the inauguration of : Juliana was a uniform or morning coat affair : during the day and there were white tie : dinners and a concert. Juliana did wear the : Stuart parure during one of these evenings : as well as other tiara's. : : Beatrix started the weird men in white tie : and women in long dresses, orders and hats. : She was the one who made the evening party a : black tie affair and did away with the : longstanding tradition of having a large : banquet in the Royal Palace on the day of : the inauguration. : : : : --Previous Message-- : It would surprise me if we would see more : than : one diadem (the Queen during the : Investiture). It is also possible the Queen : will not wear a diadem, also that is nothing : new: in 1948 Queen Juliana opted for a : (bejwelled) juliette cap instead of a : diadem. : : :
