Thanks for this. I know this has been mentioned in the earlier post, but, King George did describe the tiara as 'May's best', which would suggest that it was already in existence when the Durbar was being planned. It was in a letter to Queen Alexandra, and that phrase is often quoted, but I'm struggling to find the rest of the letter. If he described his crown as being new, it would allow the question to be asked of why May's tiara wasn't also described as being new. One other thing which has always puzzled me is the style of the Durban parue. Perhaps it is just the turning point between the belle epocque style and a slicker Jungendstil, but it strikes me that whilst the tiara [in its emerald lollypops existence] and the stomacher brooches are similar, the various necklaces seem to be in a completely different style, as if this were a married parue, rather than one created with a unified purpose. It's only a feeling, based on a slight degree of observation, but it would be interesting to see what others thing. Unfortunately I can't get to my books at the moment [damp rot, so am camping elsewhere].
