It seems quite clear to me that Carrington & Co made the items containing the Cullinan stones presented to Queen Mary by the government of South Africa. I realise that on page 164 of The Queen's Diamonds Roberts says at the top of the page that Garrard made the brooch with the heart shaped Cullinan V, but I believe that the evidence shows he is mistaken. Roberts himself seems uncertain as in footnote one he says "These two charges probably also incorporate the cost of designing and making the setting for the Cullinan V and Cullinan VIII brooches,..." I suspect that Roberts was referring to the Garrard ledger entry for the cost of making the emerald stomacher which incorporated the existing brooches with the Cullinan stones. As the government of South Africa presented the stones mounted to Queen Mary it seems reasonable to suggest that the government also paid for the setting. Perhaps we have a South African board member who could look in the archives. Re outworkers. My understanding is that Carrington & Co, like Garrard, had their own workroom where there were jewelers employed full time by them. (Some firms are strictly retail jewelers only) Both are also said to have used other manufacturing firms to do work. Sometimes the person known in the trade to be the best at specific types of work is self employed or works in a manufacturing firm. To engage people not employed directly by a firm was and still is a common practice. It is a very similar process as to how William Drummond & Co (a retail firm) in Melbourne engaged Joseph Mann to make the wattle brooch for QEII. --Previous Message-- : : : Brilliant Beth.
