I am now quite convinced that Carringtons made the gifts as given to Queen Mary. No problem. (I will come back with details about what the outworkers did.) I can understand that Garrards might have done some work on the brooches for the Durbar stomacher. Roberts really should have provided a more detailed story, or not included it at all. Though I must add that I do not believe for one moment that Roberts performmed all the research for that momentous work The Queen's Diamonds himself. He had to depend on a team of researchers - and they seem to have let him down in more than one area! More than once I have been disappointed in work of Royal Collection staff who relied only on Field and Menkes instead of starting with primary sources and contemporary publications. After all, they are a better position than most for access.
