I think that the quote which Airgrette and Nellie ( http://members2.boardhost.com/royal-jewels/msg/1456649298.html ) refer to is used in Kenneth Rose's biography of George V and J Pope Hennessy's biography of Queen Mary. Geoffrey Munn in Tiaras. A History of Splendour page 130 uses the quote and cites Pope Hennessy. --Previous Message-- : Thanks for this. I know this has been : mentioned in the earlier post, but, King : George did describe the tiara as 'May's : best', which would suggest that it was : already in existence when the Durbar was : being planned. It was in a letter to Queen : Alexandra, and that phrase is often quoted, : but I'm struggling to find the rest of the : letter. If he described his crown as being : new, it would allow the question to be asked : of why May's tiara wasn't also described as : being new. : : One other thing which has always puzzled me : is the style of the Durban parue. Perhaps it : is just the turning point between the belle : epocque style and a slicker Jungendstil, but : it strikes me that whilst the tiara [in its : emerald lollypops existence] and the : stomacher brooches are similar, the various : necklaces seem to be in a completely : different style, as if this were a married : parue, rather than one created with a : unified purpose. It's only a feeling, based : on a slight degree of observation, but it : would be interesting to see what others : thing. Unfortunately I can't get to my books : at the moment [damp rot, so am camping : elsewhere]. : : : :
