Many thanks Helen. I think I'll have to re-read Pope Hennessy when I hunt down where I have stored the book. It was an interesting biography. Laura has been too generous with her comments. What I did was a very basic search on the paper. How I wish I were in the UK as there are papers from a number of these firms in archival depositories. It would be fascinating and fun to try to connect the various pieces. I think that Roberts' tome is the best of the jewellery books on the personal jewels of Queen Elizabeth. It has given us all enormous insights into the history of some royal jewels. Despite the resources of the Royal Collection staff, I suspect that the money available for research and the time limits imposed by HM's jubilee meant that some decisions were made not to pursue obscure avenues. Sometimes researchers can spend ages investigating dead ends, especially if they are not an experienced research historian.
