A detailed and helpful survey, thanks Lee. I'm pleased you mentioned Bruno Walter's 'live' New York recording (rescued from a junk shop!) The sound was never going to be FFRR, but it's tolerable and surely a fair representation of the conductor's view of the work at the time. The final climax is more tremendous than Karajan/VPO, despite the vast disparity in sound quality. Walter was, of course, scheduled to record the work in stereo but the project was delayed until it was too late. I agree that the Klemperer/Cologne performance is a top historical choice.
