Among other things, I was glad to read Lee's praise for Walter's 1941 New York broadcast performance and for Klemperer/ Cologne. As Bruckner recordings proliferate in our time, I still find myself drawn to “historic” and to lesser-known vintage versions. I don't think any of the following recordings have yet been mentioned, so I'll mention them. These are high on my personal list of “overlooked favorites” and well worth the attention of any lover of the Bruckner Eighth:
Konwitschny/ Berlin RSO (1959)
Kubelik/ Bavarian RSO (1963)
Kubelik/ Bavarian RSO (1977)
Suitner/ Staatskapelle Berlin (1986-87)
Among 21st century recordings, I too have high regard for Ballot's St. Florian concert performance, although I've heard it only in standard stereo, not multichannel.
Has Blomstedt/ Gewandhaus been mentioned?
I believe Honeck and the Pittsburghers were due to record the Eighth sometime this year, but who knows if & when that project will go ahead.
