I looked on Getty and found this portrait of the then Queen Elizabeth clearly wearing the pearl ring. It was taken in 1946. So she did wear it before she became a widow. Maybe her husband gave her this ring too. And maybe she never really liked her engagement ring?
(Personally I find it a bit odd, but each to her own)
