She also wore a splendid train to the coronation of George VI so this could very well be the outfit for the coronation of her first cousin. The only really grand event she might have attended in 1902 that would require is Edward VII's coronation. --Previous Message-- : : You underline my point. : : : --Previous Message-- : She was never a Princess of the UK. Queen : Victoria granted the children of Princess : Helena the title of His/Her Highness. After : the King decided that his relatives living : in England should not use their German : titles, Princess Marie Louise dropped the : her paternal name of Schleswig-Holstein and : was known simply as Princess Marie Louise. : As she was not a Princess of the UK she was : not entitled to a Princess' robes or : coronet. : : --Previous Message-- : : I don't entirely agree with the suggestion : that the portrait related to any coronation. : Although the very long train on the dress : does need explanation. : If it was for a coronation then her status : was possibly not that of a British Princess : at that time, and therefore the long train : on the dress rather than as robes. : : : --Previous Message-- : The Royal Collection site has the comment : that : the photo might be from the coronation of : Edward VII. : : If that is correct, it suggests that the : jewels worn by Princess Marie Louise might : have been her then grandest jewels. : : The tiara she is wearing in the photo looks : like a composite jewel, with possibly a : diamond choker being used as a base to form : a more substantial tiara. : : I suspect that, later, the Princess had : existing jewels, including those seen in the : photo(and probably some she inherited), : remodeled, which would have enabled her to : create the honeysuckle and Indian tiaras. : : In the photo above she is seen wearing a : diamond necklace; yet, I do not recollect : seeing her in later life wearing anything : other than pearl necklaces. Either she did : not like the style in later years or perhaps : she had jewels given to her as wedding : presents remodeled. : : The above is all just guess work. : : Does anyone have a list of her wedding : presents? : PS I have noticed in the press at the time : of her marriage, she is referred to as : Princess Louise and occasionally as Princess : Victoria Louise. : : : : : : :
