Thank you Nellie, Your information suggests that the Princess had at least two British orders prior to the death of Queen Victoria - unless I am mistaken. That raises a query as to why she was not photographed with a British Order in the photograph from the Royal Collection site you posted, -- for which the RC people gave a date of circa 1902. I would expect that, if the Princess had royal orders given to her by Queen Victoria, she would have worn them at the coronation of Edward VII. If my thinking is correct - and it may not be -- the question is when was the photo taken (which you posted at the beginning of this thread)? Why was the Princess photographed wearing major jewels and why did the Royal Collection comment that it might have been from the coronation of Edward VII? --Previous Message-- : These are from my notes of 2009: : : The sash is probably the British Empire. : : The bow for the Crown of India was light : blue with white edges but I doubt it had a : sash. : : According to Royal Orders by Hugo Vickers, : and My Memories of Six Reigns by Her : HIghness Princess Marie Louise, she was - : : VA - Lady of the order of Victoria and : Albert : CI - Imperial Order of the Crown of India : (in 1893) : GCVO - Dame Grand Cross of the Royal : Victorian Order (in 1953) : GBE - Dame Grand Cross of the Order of the : British Empire (in 1919) : RRC - The Royal Red Cross : : British Orders and Decorations by Peter : Duckers says, for the British Empire - : : "The Sash, a broad 96mm (3.7 inch) wide : ribbon of the Order, passes over the right : shoulder and carries the Badge of the Order : over the left hip." : : The 1917 ribbon was purple but changed in : 1936 to pink with narrow edge stripes of : pearl grey. : : : : : --Previous Message-- : That is a very significant point Brian. : : Nevertheless, I suspect that even for an : evening court she would have worn an order, : if she had one at that time.
