Bragança tiara safe in Sweden Archived Message

Dear Pedro, indeed is a pity that these fabulous jewels left the Braganças, but when I was reading your words I suddendly thought about what could have hapanned if they indeed stay with the Braganças... I shiver to think that this fabulous tiara could, at some point, end up in the hands of Queen Maria Pia... It is well known that Maria Pia had the ancient portuguese jewels, and her mother-in-law's jewels, completely dismantled to make new design ones to her taste. I simply cannot think of such a destiny to this magnificent tiara... Amongs those jewels were the big XVIII century emerald corsage brooch, a saphire necklace, a diamond foliage convertible tiara and many other pieces from Queen Maria II inheritance... In my point of view Maria Pia's intervention in the royal jewels was simply catasthrophic. Wonderful pieces, centuries old, simply disappeared as such. After the revolution the Queen had huge depts, so an auction was made with her most valuable pieces. Hundreds of items were sold... According to what I read, Empress Amelie, already in exile and living in Lisbon, was not on very good terms with Queen Maria Pia. It seems the Empress was not pleased on how Maria Pia received her sister Queen Josephine and the King of Sweden when they visited Portugal. According to the Empress, Maria Pia did'nt give the royal visit the importance and pageantry that the Swedish royal couple deserved. In her will she left the major and most valuable pieces to her sister Josephine. According to what I read, the portuguese relatives were allowed to choose one of her minor sets. I am at this point very gratefull that these ancient and magnificent jewels are "safe" in Sweden, and we have the previledge of seeing them being worn in all the splendour they had over 100 years ago --Previous Message-- : I completely agree with you Cristina. : : Though it's such a shame these wonderful : jewels left the Braganza dynasty, how lucky : we are they ended in Queen Josefina's hands : and the Swedish Queens continued to wear : them in the most glittering way possible. It : would be such a waste if they remained with : a non-reigning RF. : : --Previous Message-- : Thank you! I don't remember CP Viktoria's : nor : Queen Lovisa's pictures either... I : definatelly need to sharpen my eyes . : : Well, I really don't know what to say about : these earrings... The stones are superb, no : doubt about that, but I think I understand : why they were worn only twice. That design : really has something unapealling to me, I'm : sorry to say. And the metal : "string" behind the earrings makes : them look a bit like safety pins... : : Queen Lovisa did try to improve them by : adding pearls, and in fact I think they look : nicer, with a more complete design. : It would be a nice idea, and quite modern I : think, if the royal ladies decid to hang : diferent stones from the earrings like Queen : Lovisa did with the pearls. Perhaps there : are some loose rubis, amethysts, emeralds : that could fit... The earrings would be : easely convertible and more wearable than : they are now... : : : : : : : --Previous Message-- : I posted pictures when Victoria was seen in : these earrings... : : : : In addition, I found picture of Queen Lovisa : of Sweden wearing the same earrings with : pearl drops...As many times I have looked at : this picture, I never noticed earrings just : like you didn't notice them on Queen Silvia : in 1976 LOL... : : : : : :
