The Royal Collection's website has several HQ pictures in colour of this portrait of the Duchess of Kent. The brooch looks as if it is made of sapphires and pearls, and the earrings seem to be made of pearls. But surprisingly, the description given by the Royal Collection mentions that "the Duchess of Kent is depicted wearing a black velvet evening dress with the amethyst brooch from the Kent demi-parure at her breast". So the mystery remains... - a watercolour by Sir William Ross: http://www.royalcollection.org.uk/collection/421461/victoria-duchess-of-kent-1786-1861 - a watercolour on ivory made by Guglielmo Faija, after the painting by Sir William Ross: http://www.royalcollection.org.uk/collection/421467/victoria-duchess-of-kent-1786-1861 --Previous Message-- : What wonderful finds Barbara. I agree that the : colour of the stone in the brooch worn by : the Duchess of Kent may be due to the : reproduction process. Pigments also fade in : old paintings, particularly if water colours : are used. What is of interest to me is that : there are purple undertones in the stones. : As you say, either the artist had a very : vivid imagination or this is a separate : brooch as I initially thought. : In the photo on the right hand side I can : see, at the bottom, what looks like another : amethyst item. Could you post the entire : image please. : Your photo of a second similar necklace with : very similar if not identical star shaped : links is intriguing, proving that the : Duchess' necklace is not a unique design. : The second is even more dramatic. I wonder : if the Duke of Kent gave the necklace to his : wife and if, because of his financial : situation, he could not afford to have : diamonds in a sun ray pattern for all the : elements. I hope that somewhere there is a : painting of the Duchess wearing the : necklace, but I suspect I will be : disappointed. : : --Previous Message-- : I found the painting joye posted from : Victoria, Duchess of Cambridge on the RC's : website and tried to enlarge the brooch. : Either this artist has a very, very vivid : imagination or the brooch has been altered : OR it's an entirely other brooch which : belongs to the demi-parure but has not seen : the daylight (at least in public) since : ages... : : The brooch in the painting: : - has an oval stone - not a hexagonal : - is surrounded by rows of diamonds (2 or 3) : - I see no scrolls (above) or sunrays : (below)... : (the fact that the stone is blue and not : purple may be due the reproduction : process...) : : Here a side-by-side comparison of the two : brooches: : : : : :
