Honestly Beth1 I am no great expert on the Windsor's fringes worn up or down.
What I know is what I have learnt from pictures.
The pictures tell me that the then Duchess of York was given a fringe tiara (from Queen Mary) in, wasn't it ? August, 1936.
But QEQM is never seen wearing a fringe necklace till just after Queen Mary's death in 1953.
I would conclude, but it's only guess work, that Queen Mary left her in her will a historic necklace, which she may have inherited from Princess Victoria, and which rather nicely compliments the tiara she'd handed over nearly 20 years earlier.
The complete lack of evidence that QEQM had the necklace as Queen along with the fact that she wore it so often in the following years, not as Roberts says 'occasionally', leads me to think he made a mistake in the date it came to the, by now, Queen Mother.
