Queen Mother's jewels Archived Message

The question emerged above about why it wasn't until 1953 that the Queen Mother wore a fringe necklace. I think it is worth remembering that most of the George VI's reign was occupied with WWII. Yes, there was the state tour of France in 1937, and a visit to Canada and the USA in 1938/9 but, then for 6 years the war meant that all the jewels were stored either at Windsor or in a secret location -there's lots of rumours about where they were kept - the crown jewels, but also the usual. I think Queen Mary comments on how, when 'evacuated' she had to eat dinner without a tiara and felt under-dressed, so we need to remember that the Queen Mother had LITTLE chance to wear the jewels she as Queen had a right to wear.
