This has been a fascinating discussion. Thank you all. Until there is some definite proof that Princess Victoria of Wales had a fringe tiara, it seems, to me, to be pointless to try to fit that into explanations. I agree with Airgrette about the war years. I would also like to make the point that there would have been many occasions when QEQM might have worn the necklace without any official photos having been taken. We are left with the mystery of why QEQM in March 1936 was having changes made to a jewel left to the crown. (I am accepting that Roberts is correct as his referencing is precise, but of course there might be a typographical error regarding the year - that would make sense.) My understanding of the use of jewels left to the crown is that it is for the reigning monarch to decide who, other than a queen (consort or dowager), could wear such jewels. The information supplied by Roberts suggests to me that Queen Mary retained use of crown jewels during the reign of Edward VIII as there was at the time no queen consort. We know for example that King George VI gave his daughter, later QEII, the Queen Caroline and Queen Ann pearl necklaces as part of her wedding presents. We also know that QEQM continued to wear jewels left to the crown after her daughter became the monarch. In March 1936 Edward VIII was the monarch. QEQM, then Duchess of York, did not possess a grand diamond necklace and it is possible that Edward VIII gave permission for her to use the necklace. Even, if he had by then planned to marry Mrs Simpson, it is probably not the type of jewel which would appeal to her or to Edward VIII. If he had married while still the King and wanted the jewel for his wife, it could be recalled. One of the more intriguing questions raised by Roberts' publication is why we have never seen QEQM wearing the Queen Mary Love Trophy Collar. On page 154 Roberts states that it was given to her while she was still Duchess of York, but unfortunately does not give any indication of the year.
