I hope Boffer would not mind that I quote here from one of his past postings on fringes: Princess Victoria's Fringe Necklace, which passed from Princess Victoria to the Duchess of York in 1935, and was worn by the Queen Mother with Queen Mary's Fringe Tiara on occasions. Upon QEQM's death in 2002 this will have passed, with the rest of her estate to the Queen. --Previous Message-- : : Regarding mistakes, Roberts did have access : to the illustrated jewel inventory of Queen : Mary. (Oh how I would love to see it.) : We believe that Queen Mary faithfully : recorded alterations of her jewels, and : gifts she made of them. : : Also I cannot see how we can identify all : fringes worn in pics of the Queen Mother, : when there was one fringe from Princess : Victoria and the heirloom fringe : tiara/necklace. : I do believe we are able to identify Queen : Mary's fringe tiara when worn by the Queen : Mother. : : --Previous Message-- : : Honestly Beth1 I am no great expert on the : Windsor's fringes worn up or down. : What I know is what I have learnt from : pictures. : The pictures tell me that the then Duchess : of York was given a fringe tiara (from Queen : Mary) in, wasn't it ? August, 1936. : But QEQM is never seen wearing a fringe : necklace till just after Queen Mary's death : in 1953. : I would conclude, but it's only guess work, : that Queen Mary left her in her will a : historic necklace, which she may have : inherited from Princess Victoria, and which : rather nicely compliments the tiara she'd : handed over nearly 20 years earlier. : The complete lack of evidence that QEQM had : the necklace as Queen along with the fact : that she wore it so often in the following : years, not as Roberts says 'occasionally', : leads me to think he made a mistake in the : date it came to the, by now, Queen Mother. : : : : --Previous Message-- : Merlin, : How do you judge which is the Queen Adelaide : fringe and which belonged to Princess : Victoria? : Roberts in QD on page 32 says that QEQM was : given the Queen Adelaide fringe in 1936 and : shows a photo of her wearing it on page 33. : : --Previous Message-- : : As we know nice pieces of jewellery were : left to the Princess Royal, the Duchesses of : Gloucester and Kent on Queen Mary's death in : 1953 I find it hard to believe a token was : not bequeathed to her successor as Queen. : The Fringe necklace being so noticeably worn : by QEQM from 1953 onwards makes it a good : candidate. : It is obviously a major piece, coming : perhaps from Princess Victoria in 1935 and : Queen Alexandra 10 years earlier. : : :
