As promised, here are details of the book. A Distant Summer (Queen Victoria in the Paris of Napoleon III) by Edith Saunders The jacket says: This book deals with a brilliant interlude in History. England and France are allies in the Crimean War. The year is 1855, and the scene Paris, where a Universal exhibition is being held and the Emperor of France, Napoleon III, is entertaining Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. The author describes the gay, imperial city of Paris; the Napoleonic host in the palaces of St Cloud, the Tuileries and Versailles. Present at these fine festivals, laughing up his sleeve at the military inefficiency of the Crimean War, is Bismarck - who meets Victoria and Albert here for the first time. The author does describe dress and jewels at various events.
