According to Germain Bapst himself (the then Crown jeweller), who had been invited to the reception at the Hotel de Ville, "the Queen wore on that day a white lace dress, with the grand sash of the Order of the Garter. She had on her head a high and heavy tiara in the centre of which the famous large diamond of the Crown of England, the Ko-hi-noor [sic] was sparkling. The Emperor had a sword whose hilt was fully encrusted with diamonds, while the guard was bearing in its centre the Regent".
