The issue of semantics!
I suspect there is a vast difference in the meaning and use of words between Victorian times and the 21st century and even the 20th century.
I realise that my reference to the ray tiara inherited by (or given) to Princess Beatrice may not correspond to what Queen Victoria mentioned in the diary reference Nellie mentioned above. I gave an instinctive reaction - and I admit one which was not referenced by context to all that Queen Victoria said in her diary. It is, I acknowledge, possible that HM's reference was to the larger diamond fringe tiara now called Queen Alexandra's [Edit: This should read Queen Adelaide's] fringe tiara/necklace.
I would like to be able to do a longitudinal study of word usage in Queen Victoria's diaries. Unfortunately, as the Queen's diaries are not available in Australia, I cannot indulge my curiosity.
Edit; I have just made a correction above. I had written Queen Alexandra when I should have written Queen Adelaide.
Unfortunately, I cannot find a way to highlight the edit I made, but it is in brackets with the word edit before it.
