I think this is similar to the story with the Queen's brooch with 7 small amethysts. There are two brooches, but because only one brooch has been seen it is assumed that there is only one brooch. The Queen probably had two aquamarine pieces with a similar description and because only one of them has been seen it is assumed that there is only one piece. Personally I have a feeling that this tiara worn by the Queen in Canada and Sophie at the wedding was a gift during the visit to Canada. We know of several other pieces of jewelry that were worn only once when first received as a gift and then never worn again. Is it known what gifts the Queen received on this trip to Canada. Laurence --Previous Message-- : I think they are just the ends of the diamond : ribbon motif that runs through the whole : design, the aquamarines look to me to be : almost tied together by the diamond detail : of bows and knotts like ribbons : : --Previous Message-- : I agree. Those "prong things" are : a : strong indication that at least one further : element is missing on each side. I'm also : wondering if the rather high setting of the : tiara might have been intended to give it : more weight optically to compensate for a : shortening. : : --Previous Message-- : Can we discuss this for a moment? : : : : When we uncovered the photos from the : Northwest Territories all those years ago, : those little prong things at the ends of the : tiara have always made me wonder if it is : flexible or if pieces can be attached or : detached to it via those little metal : spikes. Those still remain, so I think those : weird bits at the end which logically and : aesthetically should not be there, must : serve some purpose. Or at least have served : a purpose at some point in its history. I : think this lends credence to Baxter's theory : that the four ornaments that went to create : the Aquamarine behemoth came from a larger : version of the Canada/Sophie Tiara. : : --Previous Message-- : Looking at the Sophie/1970 tiara, it looks : to : me very much an antique, the sort of thing : produced around 1900. Maybe a Queen Mary : item we just don't know about? : : : : : : : :
