Sorry I did mean Cullinan VI, the marquise diamond that is now suspended from the Cullinan VIII. I typed it quickly and kept referring back to the mistaken reference when writing the rest of my piece. As for the reference to Queen Alexandra's regal circlet from the Royal Collection, they refer to it on the Microsite for the 2006 exhibition "Dress for the Occasion". Where they refer to the Cullinan VI as "The marquise pendant of 11.5 carats, Cullinan VI, purchased by King Edward VII from Asschers," as being "set by Queen Alexandra on her regal circlet." http://www.royalcollection.org.uk/microsites/dressfortheoccasion/object.asp?exhibs=BPSO2006jewellery&item=13 I think the key wording there is HER regal circlet, not Queen Victoria's which indicates she had commissioned her own as some point. Hopefully more information could be provided in the Hugh Robert's books, as no doubt they will cover the Cullinan stones in some detail. As for Queen Mary altering her crown, it was ever altered, it was intentionally made with the arches being detachable so it could be worn as a circlet. It should be noted that Queen Consorts only every wear their complete crown once during their lifetimes, at their coronations, Queen Mary's crown was intended to be worn as a circlet at other times, the same with the Queen Mother, who also wore her crown as a circlet to various opening's of parliament during her husband's reign and to her daughter's coronation in 1953. The only time Queen Mary wore Queen Victoria's Regal circlet was to the opening of parliament in 1910, which was simply because her own crown/circlet was still being made, as it was prior to her coronation. (Stills of the Queen Mother wearing her circlet to the 1937 State Opening of Parliament can be seen here: http://www.britishpathe.com/video/stills/state-opening-of-parliament-3) The reason for Queen Alexandra commissioning her own regal circlet could perhaps have something to do with the fact that her crown was not made as a permanent piece, the stones were removed as soon as the coronation was over. When Queen Alexandra's circlet was made can be gleaned through the archives and the ledgers. But I doubt we will ever know why she commissioned her own circlet, when she had access to Queen Victoria's post-1901. And I doubt we will ever know the answer to this, it is simply pure speculation. But I don't have any doubt that she had her own circlet commissioned at some point prior to 1910. In conclusion, including Queen Mary's and the Queen Mother's Crown/Circlets there have been a total of 4 different circlets worn by the Queen Consorts since 1901. 1) Queen Victoria's Regal Circlet, containing the 17 carat diamond from the Sultan of Turkey, passed to Queen Alexandra, worn by Queen Mary in 1910 and dismantled in 1937 to create the Queen Mother's crown. 2) Queen Alexandra's circlet, commissioned at some point prior to 1910, passed to Queen Maud, now with the Norwegian Royals 3) Queen Mary's Crown/Circlet, made in 1910/11, including the Cullinan IV and the Koh-i-Nor, worn by Queen Mary since 1911 as a circlet only, last worn at the 1937 Coronation, now in the Tower of London (with the Cullinan IV and Koh-i-Nor removed). 4) Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother's Crown/Circlet, made in 1937, incorporating the stones from Queen Victoria's Regal, including the 17 carat stone from the Sultan of Turkey. Also included the Koh-i-Nor taken from Queen Mary's crown. Now in the Tower of London. --Previous Message-- : : Thank you Boffer for a wonderful coverage of : the matter.
