That work also allowed the Koh-i-nûr to be detachable. Quoting a bit more about the 1914 work -
"The Queen had earlier informed the Lord Chamberlain of her intention of adding the Crown temporarily to the display in the Jewel House minus Cullinan III and IV and the Koh-i-nûr, all of which she wished to retain. Garrard's were therefore instructed to make replicas of these stones while also adapting the frame of the Crown."
The replica Koh-i-nûr is set in a detachable oval frame of diamonds to match the border Garrard's made in 1853.
We know of course that Queen Mary wore the Cullinans to Parliament before her coronation, which must have been while Garrard's were making her Crown.
I wonder if the Cullinans might have already been detachable, but without replicas, for when Queen Mary needed them. It seems the Crown was not on display in the Tower until after the 1914 work. Not entirely clear.
Now I can set a challenge for you Baxter - to find a pic of Queen Mary wearing the Koh-i-nûr as a brooch well before June 1914. The precise date the real diamond with brooch fittings was delivered to Queen Mary I cannot tell.
