I wondered why the necklace doesn't "sit" better around the neck. These flat woven or in this case mounted pearl chains usually keep lying flat. The amethysts are rather high, so that's probably why the chain seems somewhat twisted between the stones. I'm not sure if the "squeezed" bit of the chain close to the right side of the heart shaped amethyst is due to this twisted chain or to an eyelet behind the jewel. In any case it would be a rather peculiar way of attaching the pendant, which would not be removable anyway because of the size of the amethysts in the chain...
But I do agree that what the Duchess has worn is a bit shorter than what appears as shorter loop in the picture of the wedding gift.
