You could be right about the clasp, but then I see similar in the long loop. I just don't know enough to tell if gems are upside down or not. Thanks again for the exchanges. We must wait for the next volume from the Royal Collection - The Queen's Amethysts.
--Previous Message-- : Thank you for the photo. My memory was : obviously playing tricks and mixing this up : with something more simple. Regarding the : heart shaped amethyst I was thinking of two : hooks hidden in the back which would allow : to attach it to the chain from above. : Nonsense. : : Looking again at the wedding gift photo I : think there might be already a clasp in the : shorter loop, placed directly above the : heart in the box. The distance between the : amethysts is so much shorter. : : BTW, some of the amethysts in the outer loop : as dislayed in the box seem to be turned : upside down, with their pavilion up. Since : this is a flat chain, which has when mounted : an underside and an upperside, the stones : would give a clue how the necklace was meant : to be worn. If it was designed as a sort of : double strand necklace the flat chain was : surely mounted to show the upperside of the : stones. If it was intended to be worn as a : sautoir, the amethysts would turn upside : down when displaying it in two rows. : : But the photo is probably too blurred to : decide if the stones are indeed displayed : upside down and whether the chain is twisted : or not. :
