Thank you for the photo. My memory was obviously playing tricks and mixing this up with something more simple. Regarding the heart shaped amethyst I was thinking of two hooks hidden in the back which would allow to attach it to the chain from above. Nonsense.
Looking again at the wedding gift photo I think there might be already a clasp in the shorter loop, placed directly above the heart in the box. The distance between the amethysts is so much shorter.
BTW, some of the amethysts in the outer loop as dislayed in the box seem to be turned upside down, with their pavilion up. Since this is a flat chain, which has when mounted an underside and an upperside, the stones would give a clue how the necklace was meant to be worn. If it was designed as a sort of double strand necklace the flat chain was surely mounted to show the upperside of the stones. If it was intended to be worn as a sautoir, the amethysts would turn upside down when displaying it in two rows.
But the photo is probably too blurred to decide if the stones are indeed displayed upside down and whether the chain is twisted or not.
